Dasoha at Family shelter 2012

Dear VSNA members,

Youth committee invites children who are 12 years and above for VSNA 2012 Dasoha event on Nov 25th at the Family shelter in San Jose. If your kids would like to volunteer for this event, please sign up with our youth committee members by Nov 22nd.

All volunteers will meet at one of our members’ house in Cupertino at 9:30 AM to prepare food and leave for the shelter together at 11:00 AM. Only 10 volunteers are allowed inside the shelter home to serve food from 12 – 1 PM and then clean up from 1-2 PM. The parents need to drop off their kids by 9:30 AM and pick them up from the shelter at 2 PM or from our members’ house in Cupertino at 2:30 PM.

Based on number of kids sign up for the volunteer, we will decide the venue to prepare food.

Congratulations to our youth secretaries Allam Pattanshetty, and Aman Burji upon successfully organizing Dasoha event at the San Jose Family Shelter on Nov 25th.

Thanks to Anu Burji and Shobhalatha Pattanashetty for orchestrating this event, and helping kids in preparing food.

Deepavali 2012 Event Report

Message from President, VSNA NCAL 2012

Dear VSNA Members,

First of all, I would like to thank you all for making this a great year. You all came in large numbers not only to attend the event but also to participate and volunteer in your own programs and events. You made this happen

Thanks to all the professional artists, kids and all members for enthusiastic participation in events, forums, activities throughout the year.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all the volunteers who helped us in every step of the way to make this year very successful

Next I would like thank the highly dedicated and hard working committee members and their families. They have worked tirelessly sometimes day and night to bring together fantastic programs and events to you.

Special report from our entertainment committee: Naina Pattanashetty

Deepawali celebrations started off with welcome speech by VSNA 2012 President Thippeswamy Hariyaplar followed by “Prathana” from Suma Moogi. There was a skit performed by Mr. Sachin Pattanshetty and Mrs. Naina Pattanshetty. The skit was based on Ramayana in modern age of internet, Facebook and iPhones. This script was written by Kiran Swatantramath. Dialogues of Rama were delivered by Kiran Swatantramath and dialogues of Sita were delivered by Suhasini Amaranand. This skit had 4 scenes where each scene was performed between first 4 kids dance performance. The first kids dance (age 4 and above) dance was for Bollywood number “Gun Guna” choreographed by Rupali Mallikarjuna. The second kids dance (age 6 and above) was for music remix “Tumhi ho bandhu from cocktail and Disco deewane from Student of the year” choreographed by Anuradha Burji and Shanta Vajragiri. Music Remix was by Suma Moogi. The third kids dance (age 7 and above) was for Kannada and Hindi medley choreographed by Pratima Angadi. The fourth kids dance (age 4 to 7) was for Hindi medley “Pallaki_Deewangi_Gangnam_Style” choreographed by Shilpa Hangi. The fifth kids dance (age 7 and above) was for medley “Jinke Marina and Dhinka Chika” choreographed by Shilpa Hangi. The sixth kids dance (age 5 and above) was for “Deepawali Aayi Re” Bollywood number choreographed by Shobhalata Pattanashetty. Costumes for all kids dance were fabulous and the kids put in their best. It was evident that parents had put in lot of effort and time. It is great to see the confidence and enthusiasm shown by our VSNA kids. After all the kids dance programs Mallikarjuna Shirashyad entertained the crowd with standup comedy. The theme for this comedy was based on Pranesh’s comedy for different shop names in India. This was followed by game for couples “Adarsha Dampathigalu” coordinated by Vishwanand Pattanashetty. There were 5 couples who participated in this game. We had a relaxing break for dinner for about an hour.

Post-dinner session started with medal distribution for all the VSNA kids. There were about 70 kids who were recognized and rewarded for their participation. Next was stunning performance from Smaran performing arts choreographed by Vidyalatha Jeerage. This performance was followed by New Committee introduction and current year VSNA Financial Statement.

This year VSNA for the first time announced scholarship award for Elementary, Junior High and High school qualified kids whose talents goes unnoticed because they don’t get a platform to expose their talent. The main intent of this program is to recognize the outstanding VSNA NC kids for their academic/cultural achievements and contribution to our community and also motivate other kids to excel in their field.

The scholarship award was followed by dance by VSNA ladies for Kannada song “JUST_MATH_MATHALLI_Ello_Jinugiruva” choreographed by Shilpa Hangi. This was followed by standup comedy by Chandra Shirashyad. And finally signature performance was by VSNA gentlemen for Kannada song “Santhoshakke” from movie Geeta choreographed by Anand and Vinod Angadi. And finally we had closing comments by VSNA 2012 President Thippeswamy Hariyaplar. Programs were well organized by our entertainment committee and in the history of VSNA we broke the record of finishing the entertainment program on time at 10 pm PST. Entertainment committee ensured all the parents relaxed and enjoyed all the programs. It was great team work from VSNA 2012 committee, thanks to all the volunteers who helped us make it successful event, and thanks to all our VSNA members.

Deepawali event was hosted by Naina Pattanshetty, Mr. Thippeswamy Hariyaplar and Mrs. Vinutha Hariyaplar. Every effort was made to keep the crowd entertained.

Special report from our Food committee: Prathima Angadi

It was a lovely evening at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale. Our event was started off at 4 PM with milana. All guests were given a warm welcome with mouthwatering Aaloo Bonda, Crispy onion Pakora, Chocolate chip cookies & Tea

Dinner break was at around 7:45 PM.  Committee members and various enthusiastic volunteers joined hands to serve the food. Menu consisted of Gobi Manchurian, Plain parata, Sarson ka saag,Vegetable kurma, Bisibelebath ,Crispy onion Pakora, Boondi, Curd rice, Fruit custard, Paan, Payasa and Jamun.

Basava Jayanti 2012 Executive Report

Entertainment committee report from Naina Pattanshetty:

As a tradition, VNSA NC hosted 2012 Basava Jayanthi event in Livermore temple on May 13, 2012.  Basava Jayanthi celebration started off with the “Basavanna Puja” followed by a melodious song from Suma Moogi. Next was “Basavannavara Mahatwada Tunukugalu” skit coordinated by Mangala Shivakumar. For fancy dress competition we had overwhelming participation and all the kids presented their best. Age 5 and below kids represented different state bride and grooms of India. Age 5 to 7 kids presented famous characters most important in our life. Age 7 and above presented historical figures and many more characters. Fancy dress costumes were fabulous; it was evident that parents had put in lot of effort in making fancy dress competition highlight of the day. Then we had vachana competition for kids of all ages. It was noticeable that kids and parents spent many hours to prepare for vachana competition. Thanks to all our VSNA parents for encouraging their kids to participate in these events. It is great to see the confidence and enthusiasm shown by our VSNA kids to learn about our culture and perform on stage. Next was an outstanding performance by renowned vocalist Mrs Usha Prabhu. The combination of her melodious voice and vachanas mesmerized the audience.

Post-lunch session started with few more Vachana competition for kids. Next was vachanarecital by the famous singer — ”Ganapriya” Sri Nachiketa Yakkundi (Sharma). It took us to the times of Basavanna and other Sharanas. Entertainment committee ensured all the parents relaxed and enjoyed pleasant vachana recital while the kids were busy with art competition.

Next was an outstanding dance performance choreographed by Shobhalatha Pattanahshetty. This dance was for four vachanas composed by C.S.Ashwath.

This was followed by Quiz conducted by Vishawanand Pattanashetty. It gave us an opportunity to learn more about many Sharanas/Sharanes and their teachings. Overall, it was a fun filled day with quality programs in-line with Basava Jayanti theme. Programs were well organized by our entertainment committee, educating the younger generation and a realization to one and all that we are part of such a rich heritage and culture. It was great team work from VSNA 2012committee, thanks to all the volunteers who helped us make it successful event, and thanks to all our VSNA members.

Also during this event opportunity was given to new members to participate and contribute which encourages new memberships.

We take this opportunity to thank each one of you for yet another successful event of 2012. From the beautiful stage decoration to delicious menu to quality programs it was obvious that each and every committee member put great time and effort in making this event a big success.

My heartfelt thanks to Vinutha Hariyaplar, her selflessness support was a key in successful planning and execution of variety of programs and competitions.

My sincere thanks to Kiran Swatantramath for co-hosting this event and keeping the crowd engaged.

Sincere thanks to Sachin, Mahesh, Kavitha Gowda and Anu Burji for keeping the kids engaged in art competition so that parents could enjoy performance.

My deep-felt thanks to all the members who helped with prize and gift arrangements, event planning, decoration, stage preparation and cleaning, photography, Video and event coordination. Some of the members helped even without me reaching out for help.

Food Committee report from Prathima Angadi:

It took several weeks of planning and hard work for Basava Jayanthi food preparation. On the day of event most of the committee members and other volunteers arrived at the temple by 6:30 AM for food preparation. It was nice to see overwhelming response from our committee and other volunteers to join their hands for food preparation for our members and thousands of temple devotees.

Food was served between 12:45PM to 2:00PM and the menu consisted of:

  • Madike Kallu Pallya(Moth grain)
  • Lemon Rice
  • Curd Rice
  • White Rice
  • Holige Saru
  • Kadalebele Payasa
  • Papad,chili,and Pickle
  • Puffed Rice,Tea,Cookies & Apple Juice was served as a snack between 4 – 5 PM.

There were around 25 volunteers who helped in cooking the food, setting the tables, serving food, and cleaning. Special thanks from the food committee to Gangadhar Murthy for helping us in making tasty food. It was nice to hear very positive feedback from all the people about quantity and quality of the food.

Shivaratri 2012 Executive Summary

VSNA-NC 2012 committee takes this opportunity to thank all our members for your continued support and attending the Maha Shivaratri event in a big way and making it a grand success!

Our first event of the year was a big hit! We hope you all enjoyed the great food and cultural programs. We had a great auditorium, wonderful stage and back stage space. We have had received overwhelming responses with nearly 320 attendees, crossed 100 plus membership and 15 new families have joined our community.

Special report from our entertainment committee: Naina Pattanashetty.
Everybody worked towards a successful execution and there were variety of programs with a good mix of cultural and religious activities. Entertainment committee (Entertainment Secretary: Naina Pattanshetty and Program Leads: Shilpashree Hanji, Vinutha Hariyaplar, Shobhalatha Pattanashetty, Mangala Shivakumar, Gita Patil and Keerthi Hulliyappa) with help of parents and volunteers put together programs for all age groups in-line with Shivaratri theme. We tried to accommodate all VSNA-NC kids age 3 and above including new member kids.

Vishwanand Pattanashetty and Shobhalata Pattanashetty in the character of Shiva and Parvati did the MC. The MC was hilarious and kept the audience entertained.

Entertainment event started at 5.30 pm with Welcome speech from VSNA-NC 2012 President Thippeswamy Hariyaplar followed by Brahma Murrari prarthana by VSNA-NC ladies. This was followed by Bharatanatyam dance by Impana Murthy. Sheela Shankar conducted the auspicious Linga Pooja. It was inspiring to watch the kids learn to perform Linga Pooja. Yaaru Raja nataka (coordinated by Mangala Shivakumar) and the Shiva dance (choreography: Shilpashree Hanji) in the nataka was performed by kids.  This was followed by shloka (coordinated by Keerthi Hulliyappa) from VSNA-NC Fremont kids. Next was Eddelu Manjunatha dance (choreography: Shobhalata Pattanshetty), the choreography of this dance brought out the true meaning of the song and we received awesome feedback from audience. This was followed by fusion dance (choreography: Gita Patil) by east bay kids and karaoke (coordinated by Shobhalata Pattanashetty) by VSNA-NC kids. The next dance was folk fusion dance (choreography: Shilpashree Hanji and Vinutha Hariyaplar). The dance and costumes were fantastic. The costumes were designed and made by Kavitha Gowda & Vinutha Hariyaplar. Vidyalata Jeerage and group “Smaran” performed for Antharatha Nee Guru written by Kuvempu. This was first performance from Smaran at VSNA-NC event and we received good feedback for extending the invite to Smaran to perform. This was followed by sponsor introduction and new member welcome by VSNA-NC 2012 President Thippeswamy Hariyaplar. Finally it was time for the dinner break. (Details on food in the next section.)

Post-dinner programs started with medal distribution which the kids were eagerly waiting for. This was followed by talk by VSNA convention committee members. Finally the adult programs Pajithiyo Pajithi nataka and Kamsale dance were like icing on the cake. Pajithiyo Pajithi nataka (co-ordinated by Mangala Shivakumar) a humorous drama by VSNA-NC ladies and Kamsale dance (choreography: Vinod Angadi and Anand Patil) performed by VSNA-NC men received standing ovation by the audience. For the first time in VSNA-NC, a short animated movie on Basavanna was screened. Everyone waited well past our scheduled event time and watched the movie. In-spite of late start, we were able to catch-up and finish all the events within scheduled time which was possible with cooperation from Program Leads, MC and participants. The feedback were received was there was a good variety of programs done with enthusiasm and proper management.

It was a great team work. With support and cooperation from the members we certainly are looking forward to the rest of the upcoming events this year.

Special report from our Food committee: Prathima Angadi.

It was a lovely evening at De Anza VPAC theatre in Cupertino. Our event was started off at 4 PM with milana. All guests were given a warm traditional welcome with arashina, kumkuma, flowers and mixed dry fruits sachet. Many members appreciated the appearance at the entrance with Rangoli, Shivalinga and nicely decorated welcome tables.

Mouthwatering hot cut mirchi, Chuda and hot tea was served as a snack to spice up the event while kids were enjoying the chocolate milk and cookies. Dinner break was at around 7:45 PM.  Committee members and various enthusiastic volunteers joined hands to pack and serve the food. Menu consisted of Upma, Kesaribath, Masala Vada, Idli, Chutney, Sambar, Cous Cous salad & Cut fruits. It was much appreciated by all members about the taste and variety of food (especially homemade Cous Cous).
